About
The Arion Quartet was formed in October 2007 and consists of four undergraduate students at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.
The quartet has weekly coaching with Peter Lissauer and Robert Irvine, and has had masterclasses with The Brodsky Quartet, Daniel Bell, The Gould Piano Trio, Johannes Goritzki, Ilya Gringolts and David Watkin. Last summer the quartet enjoyed spending a week in Norway together studying with the Maggini Quartet.
Within the RSAMD, the quartet make regular appearances at string department concerts and competitions, as well as performances in collaboration with other musical departments. In February 2009, they formed half of the forces to perform the Mendelssohn Octet as part of the RSAMD Lunchtime Concert Series, and in June 2009, they were awarded Highly Commended for their performance at the Governors’ Prize for Chamber Music. In November 2009 the Arion Quartet took part in the celebrations for the 75th birthday of Sir Peter Maxwell-Davies, performing his 8th quartet for the composer.
Concerts outside the RSAMD have included performances for music societies in St Andrew’s, Helensburgh and Dundee, as well as a concerts at the Hungarian Cultural Centre in London and the Birnam Arts Centre (March 2010).
